Commuters in Utah faced significant delays Thursday morning after a freight train derailed near the Murray Central Station, obstructing the TRAX service lines. The incident, which occurred around 6 a.m. near 5300 South and Cottonwood Street, forced the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) to implement alternative transportation measures, including a bus bridge between Fashion Place West and Murray North stations, KSL reported.

Gavin Gustafson, a spokesman for UTA, informed that Red and Blue Line riders would face delays of "15 or more minutes" as authorities worked to restore normal service. Despite the circumstances, Gustafson stressed the agency's focus on resuming operations as swiftly as possible. "We'll get service back to normal as soon as we can," he said, as obtained by KSL. UTA also took to social media, forewarning passengers of "significant" systemwide delays, including potential hour-long waits for FrontRunner commuters detailed by KUTV.

The derailed train, belonging to Utah Railways, used the UTA's main line during overnight hours and was situated perilously close to the TRAX lines. "UTA can't operate at full speed until the derailed freight train is removed and the tracks are inspected and cleared for operation," expressed Carl Arky, UTA media relations specialist, as shared by KSLTV. Although TRAX services were running subsequently the derailment, the trains operated at reduced speeds to ensure safety.
