A tragic incident unfolded last Saturday, when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle involved in a high-speed chase with Fremont Police. The police department's statement detailed the events leading up to the fatal collision at the intersection of Osgood Road and South Grimmer Boulevard. Officers had attempted to stop a speeding vehicle around 4:10 PM. They deactivated their emergency lights and discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety, shortly before the vehicle ran a red light and caused the fatal accident, as per the Fremont Police Department.
After running from the police and driving recklessly, the suspect's vehicle collided with another car and then hit the pedestrian on the sidewalk. While driving at high speeds, the officers lost sight of the vehicle, leading to this dire consequence. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital, where he later died, marking the city's sixth fatal traffic collision in 2025. The motorist in the vehicle that was hit was examined at the scene and released.
Arrested at a local hospital while receiving treatment for his own injuries, the driver of the suspect vehicle was identified as Antwone Spruill, a 28-year-old Fremont resident, according to the Fremont Police Department's social media post. Charges are pending against Spruill for several traffic-related violations as investigators await toxicology reports to ascertain if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
