A Saturday afternoon traffic stop in Fremont turned deadly when a driver who police say sped away from officers crashed, jumped a curb, and hit a pedestrian near Osgood Road and South Grimmer Boulevard. Emergency crews rushed the pedestrian to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver was also hospitalized for injuries before being taken into custody.

Police say the driver fled a traffic stop

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Fremont police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Antwone Spruill. Officers first spotted the vehicle around 4:10 PM on Osgood Road and tried to pull it over with emergency lights. Instead of stopping, Spruill allegedly hit the gas. Police say they switched off their lights and broke off the attempt to pull the car over for safety reasons, then lost sight of the vehicle.

Crash and immediate aftermath

Bay City News Service reported via SFGATE that moments later, the same vehicle slammed into another car, went out of control, and veered onto the sidewalk at Osgood and South Grimmer, striking a pedestrian. The second driver was checked by medical personnel and released at the scene. Spruill was treated at a local hospital, then arrested on suspicion of multiple traffic-related violations, authorities said.

A worrying pattern on Fremont streets

Fremont has already logged several deadly traffic crashes this year, from pre-dawn collisions to high-speed solo wrecks, adding fuel to residents’ worries about safety on the city’s busiest routes. Hoodline previously covered an August pedestrian death on Paseo Padre Parkway that highlighted the city’s recurring road safety troubles.

Investigation underway

Investigators believe the suspect ran a red light at the intersection and are waiting on toxicology results to see whether alcohol or drugs were involved, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The Alameda County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the pedestrian’s name, pending notification of relatives. The Chronicle notes that this case marks Fremont’s sixth fatal traffic collision so far in 2025.

Police ask witnesses to come forward

Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Fremont Police Department Traffic Unit at 510-790-6760 or send an anonymous tip by texting "Tip FremontPD" to 888 777, according to SFGATE. Formal charges have not been announced while detectives continue to gather evidence and prosecutors review the case.
