
A traffic stop on Interstate 20 turned eventful when Morgan County deputies apprehended a Fulton County driver, recovering nearly 12 pounds of cocaine from a car trunk after the individual attempted to destroy his mobile phone, sparking a fire inside the vehicle, as per reports from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. The officials had initially pulled over the driver for following too closely to another vehicle, but they soon faced a more fiery scenario when the driver's attempt to demolish his phone unintentionally ignited the passenger-side floorboard.
Body camera footage captured the interior of the car filling with smoke, and deputies responded to the small fire which led them to discover a THC vape in plain view, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Further searching of the vehicle resulted in the reveal of the substantial quantity of cocaine hidden within.
In a statement redolent of stern law enforcement determination, Sheriff Hooks commended the deputies' actions during the "Frontline Friday" announcement, saying, "I’m proud of Deputies Hutto and Tilkens for being proactive and keeping this poison out of our community" and emphasizing that their vigilance was key in averting the drugs from potentially disseminating through the area, as noted by FOX 5 Atlanta. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was taken into custody after attempting to destroy evidence, which instead sparked a small fire in the car and exposed the illicit cargo.
