The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has stepped in to probe a shooting incident involving a 74-year-old Athens man during a routine traffic stop in Jackson, Butts County. In a press release dated yesterday, December 1, the GBI detailed the event that led to the Butts County Sheriff’s Office seeking their expertise.
Carl Eugene Clark, the individual at the heart of the incident, was on the law enforcement radar, wanted for an Aggravated Assault charge—details surrounding the initial offense remain undisclosed; it was during the execution of this traffic stop yesterday, December 1, that Clark reportedly turned a firearm on himself. According to the GBI's press release, Clark was subsequently transported to a local hospital where his condition has been stabilized and described as stable.
This shooting has triggered a full-scale investigation, routine in such instances where the discharge of a weapon occurs in the presence of law enforcement, marking another case that places officers in close proximity with the potential for critical situations, the GBI is now gathering facts and evidence and, in due course, will hand over its findings to the Towaliga Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for further examination and potential prosecution moves.
