The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken the lead in probing an officer-involved shooting incident in Sandy Springs, which tragically culminated in the death of 27-year-old LaAndre Marktanne Thomas. According to information provided by the GBI, Thomas was involved in an altercation that resulted in an officer shooting him on Thursday. Thomas was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
Thomas, who hailed from Jackson, MS, encountered the Sandy Springs police after they were dispatched on a 911 call. The caller described a man who allegedly assaulted her while she was out walking her dog. Using the description provided and footage from area cameras, the police spotted Thomas at a MARTA bus stop. Upon being approached by the officers, Thomas, found at a MARTA bus stop, then withdrew a handgun from his waistband during their conversation, precipitating the shooting. Although the preliminary details are being pieced together, the officers at the scene reported no injuries.
Following protocol, the GBI's involvement ensures that the investigation into the shooting remains independent of the local police department. This is a standard procedure intended to maintain impartiality and transparency when incidents of this gravity occur involving law enforcement officers. The investigation's findings will eventually find their way to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, which will review the case and decide on any potential charges or further action, according to the same press release.
The aftermath of the shooting has seen Thomas's body transported to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, marking the start of a thorough examination into the exact causes and circumstances of his death. The full details of the encounter between Thomas and the officers remain under review, with an autopsy pending, as authorities work to piece together the tragic sequence of events.
