The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist the Quitman Police Department in what turned into a fatal confrontation in the small town of Quitman, GA. A shooting which took place on Christmas Day resulted in the death of Raymond McCullar, age 35, from Valdosta, GA, and the injury of an unidentified woman.
Local law enforcement responded to a distressing call on Thursday with reports of gunfire erupting in the 120 block of N. Culpepper Street. The root of the altercation appears to be a dispute that escalated between two groups of people. Amidst the chaos, several individuals became entangled in the violence, leaving McCullar fatally wounded and a woman injured. She reportedly has sustained non life-threatening injuries. The wounded were quickly attended to by emergency services and rushed to nearby hospitals, where McCullar was later pronounced dead.
According to the official release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, McCullar’s body will be sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy to glean more insight into the exact circumstances of his death. At present, the authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting.
The investigation into the Quitman incident remains active and rigorous, as detectives comb through evidence and witness testimonies to construct a timeline of events. The GBI's findings and subsequent comprehensive case file will eventually be turned over to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office with the intent to pursue prosecution.
