In a recent celebration of educational commitment and initiative, the Germantown Education Commission has awarded distinctions to two local teachers and a high school student for their exemplary contributions. The awards were presented during the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting held on Monday, December 8.
LaTarasha Tate, an AP African American Studies and Economics teacher at Germantown High School, was named November Teacher of the Month. Known for integrating storytelling and real-world applications into her lessons, Tate fosters a classroom environment that champions college and career readiness. In her role, she has mentored fellow teachers, led student organizations, and coordinated the annual Career and Job Fair, as well as arranged cultural and college trips for students. According to the Germantown announcement, outside of her school day activities, Tate is also a published author and an active participant in community service.
Following Tate, Cassie Ring, a learning specialist at Evangelical Christian School, received the accolade of December Teacher of the Month. Ring stands out for her innovative approach to education, crafting lessons that engage diverse learning needs through multimodal strategies. Her responsibilities extend beyond classroom instruction, as she is in charge of accommodation plans and professional development for the lower school academic support program. "Cassie manages accommodation plans, mentors faculty and provides professional development, partnering with teachers and parents to ensure every student thrives," reported the City of Germantown. In addition to her educational duties, Ring actively contributes to the community by sponsoring Key Club, coaching sports teams, and volunteering with her church.
On the student front, high school senior James "Jack" Chow was bestowed with the December Youth Excellence Award. Chow, an AP Scholar with Distinction and National Merit Semifinalist, is not only recognized for his academic prowess but also for his leadership roles across various campus organizations. As a Beta Club vice president, Latin Club officer, Asian American Club treasurer, and varsity soccer captain, he leads by example. Teachers and peers alike commend him for his humility and supportive nature. Chow's commitment to service extends globally, where he has participated in international mission trips that involve both mentoring and fundraising efforts. Celebrating his Chinese American heritage, Jack also dedicates time to cultural initiatives within the local community.
The accolades signify Germantown's commitment to honoring educators and students who go above and beyond in fostering academic and community excellence. "Their commitment to excellence, leadership and service serves as an inspiration to all," honored the Germantown Education Commission, as they continue to set the standard for success and civic engagement in the area.
