What started as a routine well-being check outside Harvard ended in tragedy Saturday afternoon, when officers found a woman fatally shot and a man critically wounded inside a rural Island Road home, authorities said.
Responders were called to the house in unincorporated Harvard around 4:45 p.m., where they discovered the two residents with gunshot wounds. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the man was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. Investigators say the pair were household members and stress there is no ongoing threat to the public.

In a news release, the McHenry County Sheriff's Office said deputies, McHenry County Conservation Police, and the Harvard Fire Protection District responded to a check for well-being in the 4500 block of Island Road.
Inside, officers found an adult woman with a gunshot wound who was later pronounced dead, along with an adult man suffering from serious gunshot injuries. He was transported to a hospital for treatment. According to the sheriff's office, the two are household members, and the Criminal Investigation Division is leading the case.
