Hickory, a city known for its resilience, has wrapped up 2025 with a series of accomplishments that are worth noting. Among these is the “Spirit of North Carolina” Award, bestowed upon the city for its unparalleled efforts during Hurricane Helene relief operations. The accolade was presented during a gathering at the Visit NC Tourism Conference Awards Luncheon on April 7, as detailed by the city's year-end review.
In the realm of community and health, the Hickory Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Department expanded its race offerings, adding two more 5K events to its roster. This initiative was designed to not only encourage physical activity, but also to give participants an intimate view of the city's scenic trails. Despite the expansion in the race series, the effort proved more than just an athletic endeavor – it became a means to foster community spirit and engagement, with events like the Ruff Ruff Run 5K and Dog Festival adding a playful twist to traditional races.
Continuing with their commitment to cultural enrichment, Hickory hosted its first ever Literary Festival on April 12. The "free community event celebrated reading, writing, books, and creativity," highlighted the official City of Hickory website, featuring interactive workshops, literacy activities and various vendors. The city didn't stop there. In May, the Crafting Hickory Magazine's fifth edition was released digitally, providing updates on projects and initiatives driving the city's transformation.
Furthering the city's development, Hickory also achieved considerable progress in infrastructure. The Hickory Regional Airport saw significant enhancements, including the completion of new T-hangars and a sophisticated group hangar complete with office space, forging the path for increased economic activity within the region. Meanwhile, the police department earned state accreditation. Marking its excellence in service, "The Hickory Police Department was the 11th agency in the state to be accredited by the NCLEA program since its inception in June 2023," according to the City of Hickory summary.
Economic growth has not been sidelined, with the Trivium Corporate Center announcing major expansions in October. Corning Optical Communications LLC plans to broaden its manufacturing operations, aiming to retain and create jobs that offer attractive salaries well above the average. American Fuji Seal also confirmed their investment in the center, announcing the construction of a new facility, promising significant financial investment and additional job creation.
