In a coordinated retail theft sting, officers arrested 17 people and hauled in roughly $3,200 in allegedly stolen merchandise, all of which was returned to store staff, according to police.
Milpitas Police Describe The Sweep
According to the Milpitas Police Department, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau organized the operation alongside Great Mall security, loss-prevention teams, and the California Highway Patrol Organized Retail Crime Task Force. The department said 17 people were detained on a range of allegations, including theft, drug-related offenses, providing false identification to an officer, outstanding warrants, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Investigators reported that about $3,200 in stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to stores.
State Task Force Steps Up Pressure
The raid occurs amid a broader statewide effort to combat organized retail crime. The California Highway Patrol and its ORC task forces this year have publicized hundreds of arrests and the recovery of millions of dollars in stolen goods, efforts officials say hinge on close coordination with local police and retailers. Officials credit multi-agency investigations and retailer partnerships with making it harder for professional theft crews to operate.
Great Mall A Recurring Target
The Great Mall has seen this play before, with repeated enforcement efforts by local police and loss-prevention staff aimed at identifying prolific shoplifters and organized theft crews. As an earlier sting that detained eight suspects, prior operations have also led to multiple arrests and the return of stolen goods to stores.
What Comes Next
State leaders have pointed to new laws and funding meant to help law enforcement and retailers disrupt organized retail theft, a strategy outlined by the Governor's office. Milpitas police stated that the investigation remains active and that detectives will continue to work with retail partners to curb theft at the mall and beyond.
