An Indiana man's attempt to save his dog from an icy pond ended tragically this past Monday. Phillip Hoover, aged 69, lost his life after falling through the ice while trying to rescue his pet, as reported by WISH-TV. First responders were dispatched to the scene in Syracuse, approximately 145 miles north of downtown Indianapolis, at around 4 p.m., near the 70000 block of County Road 29.
Trying to pull his companion from danger, Hoover was reportedly attempting to retrieve his dog from the frozen water when he himself became submerged. After being rescued by first responders, he was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the WTHR detailed in their coverage. The dog, found in the incident without injuries, survived.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is currently looking into Hoover's death. "Hoover’s death remains under investigation," as per the information outlined by WISH-TV. They are continuing their efforts to educate the public on ice safety, advising citizens to consider "no ice is safe ice" and to take necessary precautions before venturing out.
Indiana Conservation Officers stress the importance of safety measures, including wearing life jackets and securing ice picks before going onto frozen water bodies. The officers, as told to WFFT, offer a reminder that informs others of a person's plans before going out, suggesting to test the ice to avoid tragic incidents such as the one that ended Hoover's life.
