State Senator Jean Leising, a Republican representing Indiana’s 42nd Senate District, reported receiving a pipe bomb threat at her Franklin County home last Saturday night. According to FOX 59, Leising attributed the threat to tensions surrounding redistricting debates influenced by D.C. political analysts. Other Republican senators, including Andy Zay, Kyle Walker, Greg Goode, and Linda Rogers, have also received threats in recent weeks amid rising political tensions over Indiana congressional redistricting.
Leising has maintained her opposition to the early redistricting proposals, which are typically conducted every decade based on census data. She told the outlet, "I would never vote yes on a bill that I did not know the contents of. I will be listening to my constituents and will vote no if there is a vote," As per Eagle Country Online.
Governor Mike Braun and the Indiana State Police are addressing the threats. Braun issued a statement saying that acts of intimidation and violence will not be tolerated and that those responsible will face consequences. Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith also condemned the threats. An article from The 812 reported that swatting incidents—false reports to law enforcement intended to trigger a large police response—have recently targeted Indiana lawmakers, including an incident involving Senator Greg Goode.
Indiana is currently navigating a contentious redistricting debate. Governor Mike Braun has called for a special session to consider redistricting and acknowledged legislative efforts to vote on what he described as "fair maps," as reported by FOX 59. It remains unclear whether Republicans have sufficient support to pass new congressional maps. An October poll indicated that a majority of Indiana voters disapprove of redrawing congressional maps outside the standard census cycle.
As the Indiana legislature addresses redistricting, the Indiana State Police are urging anyone with information about threats against elected officials to come forward. Authorities continue to emphasize that threats and violence are not acceptable in political processes.
