Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has apprehended a 33-year-old man, Lorenzo Copeland, following a series of sexual assault allegations. According to a social media post by IMPD News, Copeland is connected to at least three reports of rape that occurred in the 1900 block of E 35th Street. The post outlines that the most recent of these incidents prompted a response from Sex Crimes detectives on Tuesday.
With the detectives on the case, a link between the three incidents was established. While carrying out the arrest on Orchard Avenue , they found armed with a handgun Copeland, in addition to possessing marijuana and counterfeit money. Given his previous felony convictions, Copeland is prohibited from carrying a firearm. IMPD News reported, "Detectives obtained a warrant to collect a DNA sample from Copeland."
Following an interview by Sex Crimes detectives, Copeland faces charges including rape with enhanced circumstances, possession of marijuana, and unlawful carrying of a handgun due to a prior conviction. The IMPD emphasizes that these sexual assault investigations are in progress, and it is working closely with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, which will make the final charging decisions. While these legal proceedings continue, Copeland maintains the presumption of innocence.
"This arrest marks an important step toward securing justice for the survivors who bravely came forward," Deputy Chief Adams stated. With the collection of evidence ongoing, IMPD encourages anyone with further information to contact the IMPD Sex Crimes Office or Crime Stoppers. As quoted by Deputy Chief Adams in the IMPD announcement, "We want to assure the public that we will continue to hold offenders accountable by apprehending those alleged to have committed criminal acts, and we remain steadfast in supporting survivors every step of the way."
