A fatal officer-involved shooting Sunday morning in north Phoenix is under investigation. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, police received a call around 11:24 a.m. about a man with a gun near 7th Avenue and Yukon Drive.
Officers initially did not locate the man but soon encountered him armed with a handgun. He ignored commands and advanced toward the officer, prompting the officer to fire, ABC15 reported, quoting Sgt. Rob Scherer of the Phoenix Police Department.
The armed man suffered at least one gunshot wound and later died at a local hospital. His identity and motives remain unknown. No officers were injured. Witness Jose Gonzales told ABC15 the shots sounded like 'firecrackers,' saying, 'Literally, I hear like pop, pop, pop, like two or three.'
The Arizona Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation to provide independent oversight. Details about the events and the man involved remain under wraps as the investigation continues.
