Jefferson Parish is buzzing with the latest law enforcement tool to hit the streets—rather, the skies. Sheriff Joe Lopinto introduced a new Drone First Responders (DFR) program, and it's set to change the game in policing within the area, as reported in a social media post from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. The initiative employs cutting-edge drone technology, intended to aid in the capture of criminals and improving officer safety.

Even with only a portion of the new fleet deployed since November 3rd, the program has already assisted in over 60 arrests. "This IS a game-changer," Lopinto said, citing the rapid deployment of drones providing information that can lead to increased apprehensions, and help in court proceedings. Soon, all 23 drones will be in the air, each providing four sets of "eyes" across shifts, around the clock.

Strategic partnerships have been essential in the rollout of this technology. The sheriff's office has teamed up with Axon and Skydio drones, making it one of the nation's largest DFR programs in terms of drones in operation and flight hours. Coordination with parish government, hospitals, private schools, and fire departments has led to strategic placement of drone docking stations covering nearly all of Jefferson Parish, including Gretna, Westwego, and Harahan.

The investment for this high-tech surveillance hovers around $1.5 million annually. However, Sheriff Lopinto reassures that it's a cost-effective move, saving taxpayers money and enhancing policing efficiency and safety. Drones "supplement" the work of ground officers, without replacing them, but through unique vantage points, transform the very nature of foot chases and perimeter security.

Several key figures received gratitude from Lopinto for their efforts in making the DFR program a reality. Captain Danny Jewell was commended for his research initiative, alongside Sgt. David Lago and Deputy Chief Curtis Matthews, who have worked over the past six months to bring the project to fruition. Additionally, General Services Director Craig Cimo, Deputy Chief Sean Lusk, and the IT department were praised for logistical support, emphasizing the team effort put into this innovative program.
