Last Thursday, Kesha turned an ordinary night into a memorable one for patrons at Martuni's, a San Francisco piano bar, with an unexpected performance. According to a San Francisco Chronicle report, the pop sensation, who rose to fame with her 2010 hit "Tik Tok," surprised attendees by joining house pianist Joe Mag for a cover of Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight." Without the flash of her usual pop performance, she instead offered a sultry cabaret-style rendition that was well-received.
The singer-songwriter, sporting a sparkly gold dress and following along with a lyric sheet, seems to be reclaiming her presence on the stage with these unexpected gigs. Kesha's impromptu appearances in the Bay Area have drawn much attention, especially as there appears to be no clear reason for her to be in town, with no recent tour stops in the area. Yet, fans and the venues alike are to embrace the spontaneity absolutely. Videos of her cameo at Martuni's have rapidly spread on social media, with one post from Bay Area singer Laura Ramos accented by a caption, "And this just happened at Martuni's Just a regular night… Kesha singing with Joe Mag," as detailed on an Instagram video post.
This surprise show follows a similar occurrence in November when Kesha took to the stage at the Patio in Palo Alto, as reported by SFGATE. In a more playful performance, she sang her breakout hit "Tik Tok," a moment cut short by security who, unaware of the star's identity, asked her to step down from the booth seats. Megan Kawkab, the owner of the Patio, expressed regret over the security response, stating: "Kesha was awesome, no police were involved... there was never anything like that," and implied the artist was warmly welcomed regardless of the minor hiccup.
