In a recent display of exemplary emergency medical service, two City of Lawrence heroes, EMT Mark Cloud and Paramedic Steffi Pok, swiftly identified and treated a severe heart attack, earning them recognition for their outstanding patient care. The incident, which could have ended much differently, was detailed in a social media post on the City of Lawrence Fire Department's Facebook page, highlighting the quick-thinking actions of the first responders.
According to the post, on Tuesday, the two emergency personnel responded to a patient experiencing chest pain. Pok, a seasoned paramedic, identified the situation as a STEMI, a serious type of heart attack that requires immediate attention. Their ability to quickly and accurately diagnose the condition enabled them to effectively transport the patient to an emergency room, where they were taken to a cath lab right away for treatment. The patient made a remarkable recovery, leaving the hospital merely two days later.
Their lifesaving service was acknowledged when Steve Schenk, EMS liaison from the sponsoring hospital, visited to honor Cloud and Pok with heart pins. This small token signified a commendation for the duo's quick action and skillful handling of a critical medical event. The pins serve as a reminder of the dedication that EMTs and paramedics exhibit in the face of emergency situations.
