Christmas Eve started with the crunch of broken glass for drivers in Lincoln Park, where unknown suspects hit multiple parked cars overnight and left the street looking like a windshield graveyard. A dozen or more neighbors were suddenly staring at out-of-pocket repair bills and missing personal items, feeding growing anxiety about rising vehicle burglaries on the North Side this holiday season.
What the police say
Chicago police told CBS Chicago that officers were called to the area after several reports of cars with smashed windows and items taken from inside. Detectives are reviewing multiple overnight reports tied to the incident, and so far, no arrests have been announced.
Pattern of break-ins this month
The Christmas Eve hit did not come out of nowhere. Earlier in December, police warned that a string of vehicle burglaries had popped up around Lincoln Park near the Lincoln Park Zoo and surrounding streets, according to NBC Chicago. In those cases, officers described suspects wearing jumpsuits and ski masks and urged visitors and residents to keep valuables out of sight.
Police tips and how to report
In the wake of the latest damage, police are again reminding drivers to remove or hide valuables and to report suspicious activity right away, as ABC7 Chicago noted. Anyone with video or information is asked to contact Area Three detectives at 312-744-8263 or submit an anonymous tip through CPDTIP.com.
Neighbors react
Residents say the break-ins turned what should have been a quiet holiday morning into a glass-sweeping, insurance-calling ordeal for people who parked on the street and returned to shattered windows. Community voices have pushed for more patrols in the neighborhood. A recent spree of vehicle burglaries and vandalism advisories in late November underscored that similar problems were already flaring up well before Christmas.
Authorities say the investigation remains active. For updates or to share information, contact Area Three detectives at 312-744-8263 or visit CPDTIP.com.
