Fort Worth residents should prepare for a temporary disruption tomorrow, as a portion of Main Street will be cordoned off for the removal of a hazardous tree. The problematic American elm in Heritage Park, deemed about 90% dead, has become a danger to public safety, as reported by the City of Fort Worth's official news site.
Already partially collapsed onto a nearby pedestrian path, a substantial branch is left dangling precariously. Arborists have stated that due to the tree's largely deceased state, traditional climbing methods for removal are off the table, necessitating a crane-assisted approach. Located on steep terrain and surrounded by obstructions such as overhead power lines, the decision to close Main Street was determined as a necessary safety precaution.
The road closure will commence at 7 a.m. tomorrow, with an expected completion around 3 p.m. A detour will reroute southbound traffic from North Main Street between Northwest Fourth Street and Bluff Street, with clear markings to guide drivers around the site.
According to Joel McElhany, Park & Recreation assistant director, per the City of Fort Worth, "To protect the community and city infrastructure, this tree must be removed immediately." McElhany emphasized the urgency in addressing the threat posed by the unstable elm and the logistical challenges that necessitate Main Street's closure.
