A fatal incident on a Louisiana highway has taken the life of a pedestrian. On the evening of December 7, 2025, Ricky Verret, 37, of Maurice, was struck and killed while walking along US Highway 167 near Leblanc Road in Lafayette Parish. According to a statement obtained by the Louisiana State Police Troop I, the accident occurred shortly after 8:00 p.m. when Verret, for unknown reasons, entered the road into the oncoming path of a 2002 Jeep Wrangler.
The investigation reveals that Verret was initially walking on the right shoulder of the highway. Meanwhile, the Jeep, which was towing a trailer, was traveling in the same direction. Consequently, the collision took place, with Verret sustaining injuries that proved to be fatal, ultimately being pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep was reported to not have been injured and was using seat restraints properly at the time of the crash, as detailed by the Louisiana State Police.
Police have ruled out impairment as a cause of the crash, but they are still investigating what happened. Routine toxicology tests were done, and the results are pending. The Louisiana State Police are continuing to investigate and advise pedestrians to cross at well-lit intersections and wear reflective clothing, especially at night.
