The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and the state’s Department of Transportation (MassDOT) have recently celebrated a milestone with their 25th annual Fill-A-Bus with Gifts program. As reported by MBTA news, this year witnessed a commendable collection of 2,746 toys generously donated by employees. The gifts are destined for local organizations including the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Boys and Girls Club of Boston, and Heading Home, which will ensure they reach families in need during the holiday season.
The spirit of community and generosity has been the underlying motivation for this initiative. "Fill-A-Bus is entirely employee-led and represents the spirit of what we stand for as public servants, making people's lives better," MBTA Interim Secretary and General Manager Phillip Eng was quoted as saying. In a statement made by MBTA news, Eng expressed gratitude for both the program's organizers and his colleagues' generosity over the years. The initiative strives to engage broadly, as MBTA Graphics Manager David Wood, who has taken lead on organizing the event for the past eight years, noted the effort to reach as many transportation colleagues as possible by spanning offices and locations.
This year's record contribution continues an upward trend in giving, increasing from 2,651 gifts in 2024. The importance of these gifts cannot be understated, providing not just a plaything, but a moment of joy for families experiencing hardship. Melanie S. Lima, MSPCC Director of Development, emphasized the effect such gifts have: "Parents often tell us they want to create a happy holiday for their children, but financial strain makes that difficult and stressful," she told MBTA news, pointing out the true value brought by the donations in easing the burdens of these families.
The Fill-A-Bus program's reach is significant, touching the lives of many within the Boston communities. The Yawkey Club of Roxbury Executive Director, Corey Manning, stressed the program's alignment with the club’s mission to serve young people and families, in a partnership he underscored as essential in building community solidarity. Echoing this sentiment, Heading Home Chief Development Officer Karen Grant recounted the priceless reactions of children and adults upon receiving the gifts. She expressed heartfelt thanks to the MBTA and MassDOT employees, as told MBTA news, for their part in bringing happiness and a semblance of normalcy to families through their contributions.
