If you've got valuable property like boats, planes, or even bulldozers, Mecklenburg County wants you to declare it for tax purposes. Starting the first of January, individuals and businesses need to list any applicable personal property with the Assessor’s Office. This annual listing period, essential for tax calculations, will stay open until February 2, according to a guide published on Mecklenburg County's official news page.
What exactly counts as personal property? For individuals, that may be your jet ski or mobile home. Businesses are required to thoroughly list all property, ranging from office furniture to the more heavy-duty machinery. The catch is, they need to report the historical installed cost of these items. And if a business vehicle is roaming Mecklenburg streets but registered elsewhere, it still has to be listed locally, declares a recent statement from Mecklenburg County.
Tax rates applied to these properties will be set by the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners and other local authorities for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. The Assessor’s Office has tried to make the process headache-free by offering a few different ways to get your listings in on time. You can do it quickly online through the County’s portal, mail it, or even walk it into their office on Freedom Drive in Charlotte.
If you're planning to list that kayak or warehouse forklift, be warned: drag your feet past the February deadline, and you'll be hit with a 10% penalty. However, the County offers a lifeline in the form of extension requests. They've got to be filed - on time - by the same February due date. You can manage this either online or through a written request. Full details on how to list properties and request extensions can be found on the Assessor’s Office webpage, highlighted by Mecklenburg County's news release.
