Coast Guard officials, alongside U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations, intercepted a suspected drug smuggling boat off the Miami Beach coast on Tuesday. The operation resulted in the seizure of roughly 3,715 pounds of cocaine, estimated to worth around $28 million. According to the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast's recent post, this bust marks the "Largest ❄️ seizure by a @USCG boat station since 1995!" The collaborative efforts culminated just two miles east of Government Cut, as reported by NBC Miami.

The Coast Guard's Station Miami Beach crew initially discovered the narcotics, then was soon joined by CBP Air and Marine Operations law enforcement to thoroughly and effectively search the vessel. In a major joint effort, the authorities managed to not only intercept but also to permanently take the substantial haul of narcotics out of circulation. Lt. Matthew Ross, commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, expressed in a statement obtained by NBC Miami, “Protecting our maritime borders from illicit drug trafficking and transnational criminal organizations remains one of our highest priorities. The Coast Guard and our federal, state and local law enforcement partners remain vigilant in our shared efforts to keep our maritime borders safe by preventing illicit narcotics from reaching our communities."

Following the interdiction at sea, the vessel was escorted pierside. Once docked, a CBP Office of Field Operations Miami Seaport K9 team detected the presence of narcotics in multiple concealed areas aboard the vessel. Further physical searches conducted by the AMO agents resulted in the discovery of more than 1,000 packages of cocaine. CBP's news release highlights the coordinated response of federal agents and their specialized search tools used during the operation.

In regards to the larger implications of such an operation, Executive Director Andy Blanco of CBP Air and Marine Operations Southeast Region said, "Disrupting maritime narcotics smuggling like this demonstrates the power of teamwork in safeguarding our nation and holding criminals accountable." As he told CBP's newsroom, “Smugglers should be warned that our whole-of-government team is watching, and they will be caught.”

Three individuals were taken into custody by federal agents in relation to the narcotic seizure. The identities of the suspects have not been publicly disclosed. The apprehension of these subjects and the confiscation of narcotics is part of a broader strategy to dismantle Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Transnational Criminal Organizations that engage in narco-trafficking and human smuggling.
