Memphis locals should prepare to navigate through a blanket of dense fog this morning as the National Weather Service in Memphis issues a Dense Fog Advisory that will remain in effect until 10 AM CST. The advisory warns of visibility reduced "to one quarter mile or less in dense fog," covering parts of East Arkansas, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee.
Travel may prove to quickly become hazardous, the NWS advises drivers to "slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you". This cautionary guidance comes as the fog may severely limit visibility and hence, increase the risk of accidents. The fog advisory details that the conditions should expect to persist through the midmorning hours.
Once the fog lifts, Memphis is headed for a somewhat balmy day with the NWS forecasting a high near 75 degrees and partially sunny skies. Wind conditions are also set to remain gentle, with a south southwest breezing at only 5 to 10 mph. The evening promises to maintain a mostly cloudy sky with a low dipping around 63 and sustained winds from the south southwest at around 10 mph.
Looking ahead tomorrow, there's a slight chance of showers after noon with a 20 percent possibility and continued mostly cloudy skies with high temperatures close to 73 degrees. South southwest winds will pick up, blowing at 10 to 15 mph and gusts up to "as high as 30 mph," as per the NWS forecast. This will dramatically shift going into tomorrow night with a 90 percent chance of showers mainly before midnight and a plunge in temperatures down to 31 degrees, as winds switch to a northwest direction.
The weekly outlook from the NWS indicates a potentially brisk finish to the year, with sunny days, but cooler temperatures, particularly on Monday with a high near 37 degrees and on Tuesday peaking at 38. The region can expect to see temperatures rise slightly by New Year's Day with a forecast of mostly sunny weather and a high nearing 48 degrees.
