A woman in Memphis has been arrested and charged with criminal attempted first-degree murder after allegedly striking her ex-boyfriend multiple times with an SUV, local media reports. The incident occurred near the intersection of Gilleas Road and Nonconnah Road, with police being notified around 11:30 a.m. last Saturday.

Witness Carlos Brantley told WREG that the victim sustained serious injuries, including broken hips and a broken leg, but is expected to survive. After the assault, the 39-year-old suspect, Tanieka Ray, collided with a utility pole, exited her vehicle, and fled the scene on foot.

Later that day, officers located Ray at a residence in the 700 block of E. Davant Ave. in South Memphis. She was taken into custody and brought to the Airways police station for questioning but declined to speak without an attorney. Ray was previously arrested in September 2020 on five counts of aggravated assault for allegedly firing a gun at a group of people in South Memphis.

The victim was transported to a hospital by the Memphis Fire Department in critical condition and required treatment for multiple broken bones and dislocations, which will require surgery, police documents cited by Law and Crime indicate. The victim reportedly tried to avoid Ray’s initial strike but slipped and fell in a neighbor’s yard, where he was struck multiple times by her vehicle.

Upon her arrest, Ray was initially given a bond of $250,000, which was later increased to $1 million, according to Action News 5. The case has drawn local attention, with witness Carlos Brantley noting that Ray’s reaction may have been influenced by the end of her relationship.
