The Menlo Park Police Department responded to a tragic incident yesterday concerning a person suffering from a mental health crisis. The incident transpired at around 12:30 PM when officers were summoned to the 2200 block of Avy Ave due to reports of an armed individual suspected to be missing and suicidal from outside of San Mateo County. To ensure public safety, a lockdown was placed on a neighboring church and two schools while police assessed the situation, according to the Menlo Park Police Department.

The Menlo Park PD was able to quickly secure the area, utilizing an armored vehicle and ballistic shield to make their way safely to the individual. The person was found inside a vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and declared deceased at the scene. Nearby agencies, including Atherton PD, Redwood City PD, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, Menlo Park Fire Protection District, and AMR, were thanked for their coordination.

The Menlo Park Police Department reminds the community that support is available for those undergoing a mental health crisis. It provides resources such as 211 or 988 crisis phone lines and online chat options.
