The grants particularly target to bridge the racial homeownership gap by supporting numerous Black, Indigenous, and other ethnic or racial groups of color in purchasing their own homes.

While the demand for the Livable Communities homeownership funding is high, it wasn't possible to accommodate all 13 project applications that exceeded the available funding by over $6 million. However, the applications that were successful showcase an array of innovative solutions to the housing crisis. For example, Saint Paul is set to witness the construction of 15 affordable condos in a new, 20-unit mixed-use development poised along the METRO B Line. The project choice reflects careful deliberation by the Livable Communities Advisory Committee to maximize the number of homes funded, underlining the enduring struggle to match demand with available resources in an unrelenting market.

The broad objective of Livable Communities grants, as outlined by the Metropolitan Council, goes beyond mere home construction. It encompasses the aspiration to engender a more equitable region by fostering housing choice, spurring living wage job creation, and ensuring a seamless connection between jobs, housing, and regional amenities.
