In a move set to ease traffic and provide picturesque commutes, Miami Beach is getting its own free water taxi service, bridging downtown Miami with the breezy shores of the city. The Miami Beach City Commission, in unanimous agreement, has given the green light to Water Taxi of Miami Beach, LLC, for this gratis aquatic alternative. According to the city's announcement, the starting date is penned for late January 2026.

Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner, riding the wave of enthusiasm, sees this initiative as not merely a convenience but a change-maker. Speaking to the city's readiness for mobility solutions, Mayor Meiner stated, “l’ve been actively working to bring a free water taxi system to Miami Beach — a game-changing initiative that can alleviate traffic congestion through cleaner more efficient transit,” according to the official city website. Supported by the success of the taxis during Art Week Miami Beach, it's expected that the new service will continue this trend of popularity.

The scheduled services are tailored for commuters, with 60-minute intervals set on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., narrowing to 30-minute intervals from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. However, weekend wanderers will have to wait, as the service isn't extending into Saturday or Sunday for now. The water taxis themselves boast a capacity of 55 passengers and stretch a comfortable 40-feet in length.

Accessibility remains at the forefront of Miami Beach's transit planning, with the water taxi service connecting seamlessly to existing public transit efforts. As per the city's announcement, Miami Beach's trolley system continues untrammeled and free, as will the on-demand transit service, partnering with Freebee, in Miami Beach’s sections like Mid Beach and North Beach.
