In an act intertwining whimsy and tradition, a pig by the name of 6-7 found itself bestowed with an unusual holiday gift: a pardon. As reported by NBC Miami, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava granted the porcine a reprieve from the Christmas fate that befalls many of its brethren in South Florida.
During the eighth annual ceremony held at Latin Cafe 2000 in Brickell, the tradition was welcomed by the public who were treated to local delights such as cafecito and spinach croquetas. Serving a cultural nod to the region's lechón heritage, the county stated, "This beloved annual event blends humor, heritage, and heart, celebrating Miami’s deep-rooted lechón culture while highlighting compassion during the holiday season," as attending the free ceremony sipped on freshly brewed beverages, according to NBC Miami.
The tradition, unique to Miami, is a signal amidst the yuletide bustle that some customs can afford a slice of mercy in an otherwise consumptive time. Levine Cava discussed the pig’s name's curious genesis, citing an unclear origin, "May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from worry and full of treats, may it never know the origin of its name, the ever-evolving nature of internet memes, or the dance that goes along with it," WSVN reported.
While the fate of many pigs will culminate in a holiday feast, particularly the traditional barbecues that will be fired up all across Miami-Dade on Christmas Eve, 6-7’s outcome will keep it far from the caja china.
