Miami-Dade County now boasts a brand-new parking structure at Miami International Airport, announced Mayor Daniella Levine Cava during a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony. This garage, aptly named the Ibis Garage, is a $137-million investment adding 2,240 spots to MIA's existing parking capacity. According to Miami-Dade County's news release, the garage is part of a larger $9 billion Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) Plan aimed at revamping the entire airport experience. With the inclusion of the Ibis Garage, MIA now offers over 10,500 parking spaces, just in time for the anticipated rush of winter holiday travel.

The grand opening signifies more than just additional parking; as Mayor Levine Cava pointed out, it's about enhancing the overall convenience and accessibility for travelers at the airport, stating, "Parking accessibility and convenience at MIA just took a giant leap forward with the opening of the new Ibis Garage," and she highlighted the structure's role in easing congestion within the airport's other garages and terminal spaces. This is only the beginning, as the M.I.A. Plan promises upgraded conveyance systems, renovated restrooms, and new concourses scheduled to wrap up over the next five years,as mentioned on the county's website.

Aside from the sheer number of spaces, sustainability features prominently in the design of the Ibis Garage. Notable green initiatives include 50 electric vehicle charging stations, LED lighting fixtures which are energy-efficient, and a certification of Parksmart Silver, marking it as an environmentally conscious structure. Construction management firm Lemartec, now a part of MasTec CEI General Building, is credited with the ahead-of-schedule completion of this project. Manny Garcia-Tuñón, Group President of MasTec CEI General Building, praised the collaborative effort, saying in the same announcement, “Delivering the IBIS Garage six months ahead of schedule is a testament to Lemartec’s leadership and what can be achieved when dedicated professionals, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to excellence come together.”

The Ibis Garage is one piece of a much larger puzzle, as the M.I.A. Plan encompasses over 200 projects, targeting improvements not just in parking but in several aspects of the airport infrastructure, including updates for hundreds of conveyance systems like elevators and escalators, renovation of over 190 public restrooms, and by 2029 the premiere of a new Concourse K, all leading up to the $745-million redevelopment of the Central Terminal projected to be brought into the modern era by 2031.
