Chaos briefly descended upon a suburban train crossing on Monday when a Metra BNSF train collided with an SUV in Hinsdale. WGNTV reports that the accident occurred just before 11:45 a.m. at the Monroe Street train crossing, as captured by video footage the Hinsdale police shared on social media.
The video appears to show the vehicle entering the crossing, its front end creeping over the tracks before attempting to reverse, only to be struck by the oncoming train. The driver, fortunately, sustained only minor injuries and was transported to Hinsdale Hospital, as per FOX 32 Chicago. On-scene authorities managed to quickly transfer to another train the passengers, none of whom were injured during the crash.
Following the incident, the Monroe Street crossing was temporarily closed, causing delays for subsequent rail services. It took some time before the normal flow of traffic could resume, with first responders working to properly clear and investigate the crash scene. No additional injuries were reported beyond the driver of the SUV.
Even after the collision, train operations were affected due to the train being mechanically disabled, Police said. The incident prompted authorities to advise drivers to avoid the Monroe Street crossing, with expectations of train delays well into the afternoon. Only after thorough investigation and removal of obstructions was the crossing finally reopened to the public.
