A road rage incident in Polk County escalated to a dangerous confrontation when 64-year-old Stephen J. Phillips was arrested for brandishing a firearm at another vehicle, which included a child as one of the passengers, Polk County Sheriff's Office reported. The incident occurred near Mary Holland Park in Bartow, Florida, where according to deputies, Phillips, an optician from Mulberry, was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe, and allegedly brake checked the victims' car before both came to a stop at a traffic light on Harden Boulevard.
At the traffic light, the situation intensified with Phillips purportedly wielding a silver semi-automatic firearm and pointing it at the victims while uttering racial slurs—an account documented by the victims' photo evidence, which later contrasted Phillips' initial denial but eventual admission to having pulled out the weapon, although he claimed he did not believe he had pointed it directly at them, the Sheriff's Office detailed.
In a statement echoed by Sheriff Grady Judd, the zero-tolerance policy for road rage that culminates in violence was clearly stated: "Brandishing a firearm at innocent people—especially a child—is unacceptable. Road rage that escalates into violence will not be tolerated, and my detectives acted quickly to put this man behind bars," as mentioned on the Polk County Sheriff's Office website. This comes as communities grapple with the rising tension and violence on roads nationwide.
Phillips now faces serious legal repercussions for his actions during the altercation, he is charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (F3) and improper exhibition of a firearm (F1).
