The National Weather Service in Nashville has issued a Cold Weather Advisory that remains in effect until noon CST Monday for all of Middle Tennessee, advising the public of below freezing temperatures and dangerous wind chills as low as 3 below zero on Sunday. The advisory, which was updated at 1017 PM CST Saturday, December 13, also includes warnings for low temperatures in the teens come Sunday night.
Biting winds from the north northwest are to be expected throughout the advisory period, with gusts that could reach up to 20 mph. While traveling outside, caution is recommended during this time. Combating the merciless chill, the NWS implores residents to dress warmly, including a hat and gloves, as "wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure." The region, stretching from the likes of Nashville to Sparta, will be basking in sunny skies despite the freeze, with temperatures crawling to high near 23 on Sunday.
Looking ahead, the forecast promises a gradual warming trend beginning on Monday, with daylight bringing conditions sunny and a high near 40 degrees, with light and variable wind shifting south southwest come afternoon. The night will once again see temperatures drop, but not as severely, with a low around 24. The progression continues into Tuesday when a high near 51 is expected under sunny skies, with the wind maintaining its south southwest direction at a 5 to 10 mph pace.
After the advisory lifts, residents will be looking forward to showers possibly on Wednesday, as the service predicts a 20 percent chance during the day, increasing to a 30 percent chance by night. By Thursday, showers and a potential thunderstorm are in the cards, with a high climbing near 61. "Chance of precipitation is 90%" for Thursday, with temperatures dipping to a low around 31 at night. As for the weekend, predictions call for sunny days, though a thirty percent chance of showers may dampen Saturday with a high near 60.
