In a clear shift towards urgency, the Nashville Police Department has sounded the alarm on a staggering trend in gun thefts in the city, particularly from unattended vehicles. According to a recent press release, Nashville has seen a significant number of firearms snatched from parked cars this year. Specifically, the Nashville.gov website reports that, out of the 1,205 guns stolen in Davidson County in 2025, a worrisome 77% were lifted from automobiles. The department is imploring citizens to take extra precautions, securing valuables and locking car doors to dampen this rising tide of gun thefts.
While the numbers are stark, they reflect an increase from last year, when 839 guns had been reported as stolen from vehicles at the same point in time, per the same source. Recently, in just one week, 18 firearms were stolen from cars. With the full knowledge that these stolen weapons are often later used to commit violent crimes such as carjackings and armed robberies, the implications are dire.
Reiterating the community's role in crime prevention, the MNPD has issued a strong recommendation for gun owners. "The MNPD strongly encourages Nashvillians to lock their automobile doors, secure any valuables—especially guns, and remove the keys," the department stressed in their communication to the public. This advisory comes as a direct response to the observed pattern of thefts and the associated risks with firearms falling into the wrong hands
