New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that he and his wife, Rama, will move into Gracie Mansion, the official mayoral residence, following his inauguration in January. This announcement ends speculation about where he would live during his term, according to reports from CBS News.
During his campaign, Mamdani’s residence in a rent-stabilized apartment attracted attention, particularly in light of his family’s wealth. He has stated that he was unaware of the apartment’s status when he moved in, prior to beginning his tenure as a state Assembly member five years ago. His decision to move into Gracie Mansion follows the precedent set by most New York City mayors, with Michael Bloomberg being a notable exception, as reported by NBC New York.
“My wife Rama and I have made the decision to move into Gracie Mansion in January," said Mamdani in a statement reflecting on leaving his Astoria neighborhood. "We will miss much about our home in Astoria. Cooking dinner side by side in our kitchen, sharing a sleepy elevator ride with our neighbors in the evening, hearing music and laughter vibrate through the walls of the apartment," he remarked, as noted by CBS News.
Gracie Mansion, located in Carl Schurz Park at East End Avenue and 88th Street and built in 1799, has been the official residence of New York City mayors since 1942, providing a space for city leaders to carry out their duties. "My priority, always, is serving the people who call this city home," Mamdani told NBC New York, noting his focus on addressing the affordability crisis highlighted in his campaign. He also stated, “Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do.”
