The Bickford neighborhood in North Memphis is anticipating the grand opening of Place of Grace, a senior housing complex designed to ease the affordable housing burden for local elderly residents. With a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for tomorrow at 11 a.m., this 10-unit apartment development is the latest effort by CAAP Inc., a seasoned Community Housing Development Organization, to provide stability and shelter for a demographic too often overlooked, as mentioned on the city's website.
The project, having snatched support both federally through CHDO funds and locally from the Memphis Affordable Housing Trust Fund, represents a collaborative endeavor. The city of Memphis Division of Housing and Community Development joined forces with CAAP Inc., leveraging resources to rehabilitate the property at 1051 Seventh St., transforming it into comfortable 600-square-foot living spaces. Engaged in the process, the Community Redevelopment Agency donated the property to the cause, lining the pathway to Place of Grace's creation.
Targeting individuals 55 and older who earn less than 60% of the area median income, the Memphis Housing Authority has thrown its hat into the ring by aiding the tenant selection via its Project-Based Voucher Program. This proactive approach ensures that Place of Grace isn't merely a structure but a sanctuary for those it aims to serve. According to details from the City of Memphis official announcement, the blend of federal and local support mechanisms works harmoniously to address the often unmet needs of senior housing in the community.
CAAP Inc.’s history includes developing Uptown Manor in 2014 and managing other Memphis properties that serve elderly residents facing homelessness or addiction.
