As Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani gears up for a grandiose January 1 swearing-in celebration, his Inaugural Committee lineup has been revealed, boasting names from various sectors of New York City's vibrant tapestry. In a statement acquired by ABC7 New York, Mamdani expressed his pride in convening "some of the most creative and experienced minds in the city" to create an inauguration "by and for New Yorkers". The committee includes figures like educator and YouTuber Ms. Rachel, actress and activist Cynthia Nixon, and representatives from various grassroots and cultural organizations.
Manifesting a fiscal prowess typically unassociated with newcomers to City Hall, Mamdani's transition team has managed to vastly out-raise his predecessors, gathering a hefty $3.7M sum. According to the New York Post report, this figure dwarfs the amounts raised by former mayors Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams, with a significant portion of donors contributing the maximum $3,700—though three overenthusiastic contributors reportedly had to be refunded for exceeding this cap.
In a show of widespread support for the Mayor-elect, more than half of the nearly 30,000 donors stemmed from outside New York City, underlining the national interest piqued by Mamdani's progressive campaign. Despite the high-dollar donations, Mamdani's transition team draws attention to the median donation of just $25, highlighted by spokeswoman Dora Pekec. "Fueled by grassroots donors with a median donation of just $25, our transition fund makes it possible to recruit top talent and host an inauguration where thousands of New Yorkers can gather to celebrate our shared vision for a new era," she told the New York Post.
The upcoming block party, expected to draw up to 50,000 attendees, illustrates an eagerness to visibly illustrate the wave of enthusiasm that carried Mamdani to victory. Despite the vigorous fundraising push for the inauguration, his transition team has yet to finalize key City Hall appointments and has not released an estimated cost for the forthcoming public celebration.
