The Oakland Police Department's Ceasefire Unit has been active on the streets, carrying out their mission to reduce gun violence in the city. In a recent sweep, OPD Ceasefire officers made multiple arrests, confiscating illegal firearms in the process. The action unfolded over two separate incidents on adjacent blocks, underscoring the ongoing challenges of gun control in urban communities.
In the first incident on December 5, Ceasefire officers noted an illegally parked vehicle on the 500 block of 16th Street. A subsequent encounter with the vehicle's occupants led to a search, thanks to the officers establishing probable cause, and a loaded firearm was seized, as reported by the Oakland Police Department. One individual attempted to flee but was promptly apprehended after a brief pursuit, leading to the capture of an additional loaded firearm.
The following morning, officers continued their surveillance and enforcement in the area. On the 500 block of 18th Street, a short distance from the previous night's events, an individual was spotted trying to disguise a rifle. This encounter also escalated to a chase, ending with the individual being detained and the confiscation of a loaded rifle. These engagements resulted in three arrests and the removal of three illegal firearms from the streets.
