The streets of Ogden City have become a battleground for silence as local police, adhering to an ordinance, crack down on vehicles with exhausts that roar and boom through neighborhoods. Ogden City Code 12-14-6(J) specifically targets the cacophony of Loud or explosive sounds that escape the mufflers of cars and motorbikes, rattling windows, and disturbing the peace.
According to a social media post by the Ogden Police, the emphasis is on curtailing street racing and excessive vehicle noise that has become particularly prevalent along Washington Boulevard. The complaint from residents is clear: the late-night noise is unnecessary and disruptive. In an area known for its community-oriented spirit, the clamor of modified exhaust systems, which includes revving, backfiring, or sounds resembling gunfire, is seen as an invading force disrupting the quiet of the night.
The problem isn't unique to Ogden; cities across the nation have grappled with the issue of street racing and loud automobiles. However, what sets Ogden apart is the city’s direct approach to targeting the noise pollution at its root, the vehicles themselves. By enforcing the existing city code, Ogden Police hope to deter drivers from using modified or misused exhaust systems that contribute to the issue.
