Drivers in Oklahoma City can expect major slowdowns as a slew of construction projects are set to continue into the new year. Oklahomans navigating through Del City will find westbound I-40 reduced to a single lane at Reno Ave./Scott St. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday due to safety device repairs. Meanwhile, northbound SH-74 will also experience lane reductions to one lane at 122nd St. during midday hours for similar maintenance work.
These disruptions are part of a larger series of ongoing highway construction projects affecting daily commutes and travel plans across the city. According to the information provided by Oklahoma Department of Transportation, the intensive work on I-40, the artery of the metro, will persist through fall 2025 with nightly lane closures and intermittent ramp shutdowns from Meridian Ave. to May Ave.
Further complicating the traffic situation, I-240 is narrowed to two lanes at the junction with I-35 under a multi-phase interchange improvement project. The closures extend to Crossroads Blvd. and the S.E. 74th St./I-240 Service Road, leading to increased congestion and limited road availability. The new I-35 off-ramp to eastbound I-240 may offer some respite, providing an alternative access point for drivers.
Ongoing projects also include closures of I-44 ramps at N.W. 10th St. through the summer of 2026 due to a city bridge endeavor. Motorists commuting through Midwest City will have to endure I-40 narrowing to two lanes between I-240 and Town Center Dr., where the lack of shoulders or merge distances poses additional challenges. I-35 travelers aren't spared either, with lane narrowing between Memorial Rd., and US-77/2nd St. in Edmond projected to last through summer 2025 for resurfacing and bridge enhancement purposes.
Moving over to the northern side of the city, the SH-66 and US-81 intersection in El Reno is subjected to one-lane traffic because of roundabout construction slated for completion by 2025. Further complicating the matter, closures in Moore and Norman will also affect daily transportation, with SE 4th St. in Moore and parts of US-77 in Norman closed off for bridge projects and resurfacing, respectively.
