A tragic incident unfolded on Christmas Eve when a car crashed near Kenwood Towne Center in Sycamore Township, leaving one man dead and another person in critical condition. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the accident occurred around 11 a.m. on Montgomery Road at East Galbraith Road, as reported by WLWT.
The deceased, identified as 28-year-old Connor Walchle, was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla at a high rate of speed when his vehicle clipped a Mercedes, went airborne, and subsequently collided with several utility poles. Assistant Fire Chief Mike Fronomos told FOX19, "The vehicle rotated sideways and hit another utility pole, breaking it and bringing down power lines." The Sycamore Fire Department worked to extricate Walchle and his passenger from the wrecked vehicle.
As highlighted by The Cincinnati Enquirer, the road closure caused by the downed utility poles persisted well into Christmas Day, disrupting holiday traffic and prompting extensive repair work by Duke Energy crews. Authorities have not yet provided an estimate for when Montgomery Road will be reopened to the public.
Further details obtained by WLWT reveal that both Walchle and his critically injured passenger live in South Carolina and were visiting the area for Christmas celebrations. The accident has subsequently cast a pall over what is traditionally a festive time of year. Meanwhile, the driver of the Mercedes reportedly did not suffer any injuries in the incident.
