In a significant legal victory for food assistance recipients, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield secured a federal court order that temporarily halts the Trump administration from imposing multi-million-dollar fines on states over their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) operations. This comes after the administration's attempt to penalize states, a threat that would have injected instability and fear during the holiday season, when dependency on such aid often intensifies.
The conflict arose when the Trump administration sought to cut off SNAP benefits for tens of thousands of lawful permanent residents. Rayfield, teamed up with a coalition of 20 other attorneys general, challenged these efforts on November 26. In a turn of events, the administration rescinded the proposed cuts on December 10, acknowledging the continued eligibility of former refugees and asylees for the program. Nevertheless, states were still facing potential financial punishment over an alleged missed "grace period" for adopting the revised guidance.
In response to the continued threats, the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon stepped in. The court order, as reported by the Oregon Department of Justice, pauses the federal government's efforts to levy fines against states. The ruling ensures that Oregon can maintain smooth SNAP operations without the looming dread of being financially penalized for following the new rules stipulated by an unpredictable administration.
"Today’s ruling stops that disruption and allows Oregon to keep administering SNAP without fear of being punished for following the law," stated Rayfield, according to the Oregon Department of Justice.
