A young man's plea has quickly resolved a case of arson that commanded the attention of Oregon City earlier this year. Christian Gannon Dukes, aged 22, pleaded guilty this week to setting a fire at the defunct Blue Heron paper mill, an act that has now earned him a sentence of 60 months behind bars. The sentencing took place in the Clackamas County Circuit Court, where Dukes faced charges for Arson in the First Degree, while other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal, according to an announcement from the Clackamas County website.
Dukes admitted to intentionally setting a fire on January 30, 2025, that destroyed a three-story building at the long-vacant site. He reportedly constructed a pile of paper several feet high on the floor of the wooden structure and decided to then light it with a Bic lighter. The motive behind Dukes' drastic action was a belief that some of their belongings were stolen by transients who had been squatting on the property located at 419 Main Street.
The destruction attracted a significant response from emergency services. Approximately 190 fire personnel converged on the scene, and the efforts to extinguish the flames didn't come without consequence. Three firefighters sustained injuries in the process, though the fire took hours to be fully subdued, as mentioned in the same Clackamas County report. The fire's intensity was such that it posed a risk to neighboring areas, with sparks threatening to ignite additional fires in a residential district situated on a bluff east of the mill site.
“This fire created a very dangerous situation and put many people in harm's way,” Deputy District Attorney John Millar was quoted by the Clackamas County news release, emphasizing the gravity of the event. The damages inflicted by the fire are to be translated into a financial restitution, the details of which will be deliberated upon in a future court hearing. Dukes' actions, which demanded a full-scale intervention and placed civilians and servicemen alike at risk, will now be followed by a five-year prison term, formally concluding case number 25CR33032.
