
A shooting near Overton High School in Memphis yesterday has left a 17-year-old student seriously injured. The incident occurred at approximately 11 a.m. in the 4800 block of Willow Road, close to the high school and Marion Hale Community Center. The Memphis Police Department responded to the scene, finding the male victim, who was then transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition but later stabilized, as reported by the Commercial Appeal.
According to Action News 5, the shooting happened after two men, who were later seen leaving the area in a black sedan, are said to have shot the student. In response to the violence, Memphis Shelby County Schools reported that they had placed Overton High School under lockdown to secure the safety of students and staff during the incident.
Local Memphis shared details provided by Memphis Police Colonel Frank Winston, who stated that the shooting appeared to have been an attempted robbery. "Overton High School and Memphis-Shelby County Schools remain committed to the safety of all its students and staff," a statement from the district reiterated, emphasizing their position on the matter.
