Palm Beach County is moving forward with improvements to its water utility infrastructure following the award of nearly $16 million in grant funding from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The funds will support Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department projects aimed at strengthening system resilience and protecting critical facilities from extreme weather impacts, as per the county's announcement.

The majority of the grant — $10 million — will be allocated to the Water Treatment Plant 11 (WTP 11) Upgrades Progressive Design-Build project in Belle Glade. WTP 11 serves as the sole source of potable water and a critical fire-suppression resource for Glades communities, including South Bay and Pahokee. According to the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department, the upgrades are designed to protect the facility from flooding and ensure continued operation during extreme weather events.

“This critical funding will allow the county to reduce the risk of equipment damage and service disruption during future flood or extreme weather events, ensuring continued delivery of safe, high-quality drinking water and fire suppression capabilities to the western region communities,” County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo told the newsroom at discover.pbcgov.org.

An additional $5,472,998 has been allocated for the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department’s Western Region Wastewater Treatment Facility Operations Building in Belle Glade. The funding will support construction of a modern replacement facility designed to meet current safety standards for employees and improve resilience against storms and other severe weather events. Officials noted the existing building is outdated and poses risks to the continuity of essential services.

Keeping a clear focus on the area's needs, Mayor Baxter chimed in on the significance of the funding, “Palm Beach County is dedicated to providing best-in-class utility services to its customers in the Glades,” he explained on the county's website. “Funding from the Resilient Florida program will allow the county to upgrade its critical utility infrastructure while providing a state-of-the art environment for employees to deliver services to the community.”
