Panther Creek State Park has snagged an award for Excellence in Amenities, an annual recognition part of the Tennessee State Parks Awards of Excellence. In a nod to the resilience and dedication of its staff, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) handed out accolades after the park bounced back from the ravages of Hurricane Helene in 2024. According to a TDEC announcement, Commissioner David Salyers said, "We congratulate Panther Creek State Park for this award and commend the staff for keeping the park so inviting, despite the challenges the park faced following Hurricane Helene."
Post-storm efforts at the park were nothing short of intense; staff and volunteers, including those from a local bike club, managed to quickly clear the 28-mile trail system of 409 trees, painstakingly determined to restore safe public use within seven weeks. This team's ability to not only rebound but also to improve the park's offering through meticulous monthly upkeep is at the heart of their acclaim. The TDEC release detailed the park's dedication to not only keeping trails open but also enhancing living quarters, such as converting a structure into a seasonal residence complete with modern necessities.
The amenity award specifically singles out a park's success in fortifying the quality and performance of its facilities—a symbolic nod to the visitor satisfaction and the statewide pride in the Tennessee State Parks mission. Panther Creek State Park's improvements, as TDEC notes, resonate with this mission and the broader vision for the state's natural preserves, reinforcing the park's value to both locals and visitors alike.
Meanwhile, TDEC spread the recognition among other state parks, highlighting achievements in various aspects of park management. Johnsonville State Historic Park received the Excellence in Resource Stewardship Award, Roan Mountain State Park got the nod for operations, and Henry Horton State Park was praised for visitor experience. Rounding out the accolades, the Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail State Park was lauded as Park of the Year, a testament to their all-around excellence across the board in providing a standout park experience.
