The City of Phoenix is preparing for the Christmas holiday with adjustments to city services to accommodate the festive season. According to a recent notice from the city, residents can expect alterations to waste collection schedules, library hours, and public transportation availability, among other services, as the city observes December 24 and 25.
In keeping with the holiday schedule, solid waste collection will not be available on Christmas Day. Collections usually scheduled for Thursday will shift to Friday, December 26, and Friday's collections will move to Saturday, December 27, as detailed by the official City of Phoenix notice. Waste facilities such as the 27th Ave. and North Gateway transfer stations will close early on Christmas Eve and remain shut for the entirety of the holiday.
For those with last-minute inquiries or service needs, the Public Works Customer Contact Center will close at noon on Wednesday, December 24, and will not reopen until 7 a.m. on Friday, December 26. However, Phoenix residents won’t be left entirely in the dark; the myPHX311 portal remains accessible for service requests throughout the holiday period.
Bookworms should also plan accordingly, as all Phoenix Public Library locations will observe the Christmas closure, shutting their doors at noon on December 24 and staying closed on December 25. Yet, the library's digital resources and book drops will still be available for use at any hour. On the transportation front, public transit adapts to a holiday cadence. While buses and light rail will run on a weekday schedule on December 24, they will switch to a Sunday schedule on Christmas Day. Dial-a-Ride services will be available by reservation during the holiday.
Regarding parking and navigating the city, though parking meters will be enforced as usual, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., even on holidays, travelers can breathe easier knowing Phoenix parks and trails remain open, although recreation facilities will see reduced hours on Christmas Eve and closure on Christmas Day. Those flying through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are advised to book parking ahead of time and check for the latest on their flight status, with the airport providing several convenient services to expedite travel, such as the PHX Reserve program for TSA screening.
