As Phoenix prepares to usher in the New Year, city officials are reinforcing their stance against illegal fireworks, echoed by a dramatic near-miss incident caught on camera over the weekend. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, a dedicated task force will be patrolling to crackdown on festivities that cross the legal boundaries, potentially landing violators with fines up to $1,000.
The risks associated with unlawful pyrotechnics were underscored in a close call where a firework almost struck an unwitting sedan navigating through a Phoenix neighborhood. As 12 News reports, the incident took place at the intersection of 18th and Peoria Avenues and involved a car driving through the aftermath of an exploding firework without sustaining visible damage. This event serves as a stark reminder of what might happen when celebrations go unchecked.
The Phoenix Fire Department's Captain DJ Lee emphasizes the importance of safety during the holiday revelry, stating, "Lots of fireworks, lots of excitement. Lots of parties," in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. He warns of severe injuries such as burns or worse from illegal fireworks, likening them to "a small stick of dynamite going off." Residents are urged to limit their selections to legal options like smoke devices, sparklers, and fountains lest they face stringent penalties.
Public safety officials advocate a vigilance that extends beyond human well-being, reminding the public to secure pets and soak used fireworks overnight to prevent accidental reignition. These precautions follow a concerning report from the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission highlighted by 12 News, bringing to light nearly 15,000 emergency room treatments for firework-related injuries in 2024 alone, with eleven fatalities marking the potential consequences of carelessness.
