The Portland Water Bureau has switched from the Bull Run Watershed to the Columbia South Shore Well Field due to high turbidity from recent heavy rainfall. Groundwater is now serving as the city's primary water source, according to the City of Portland.
Officials say Portland residents do not need to take any action, and the drinking water remains safe. The groundwater system is functioning properly and continues to meet all safe drinking water standards, as reported by the City of Portland.
Portland’s Water Bureau successfully switched from surface to groundwater, using a dual-water source strategy and ongoing staff efforts to maintain clean water. Interim Director Quisha Light said, "We constantly monitor water quality and plan ahead for the weather's impact on our water supply." The city is also building a Bull Run filtration facility to remove sediment, bacteria, and other contaminants during extreme weather, as stated by the City of Portland.
